Bio

Athule Mbekeni is a film director/ writer from South Africa based in Miami. Her work as a filmmaker began when she became a reader for Singleholic, a romantic feature film that stared Erica Ash, Adrian Martinez, Stephen Bishop. She went on to study Film Production Technology at Miami Dade College where she focused on creating films with social and cultural themes that celebrate culture from all parts of the world, and African traditions.As a young filmmaker in this new digital era Athule is open to digital creativity and modeling.

SEE BEAUTY

One of Athule’s first creation is See beauty is a short non-verbal film that illustrates a black woman overcoming the adversities of societal beauty standards. Her inspiration came from personal struggles, and seeing the damage that skin lightening creams, and surgeries that black women go through and so wanted to create a masterpiece that shows that once one looks in the mirror and sees herself as beautiful, societal standards of beauty do not matter.

The Calling

A short film that aims to shine light on the misconception of traditional healers. The calling follows Bongani’s journey in discovering his calling and coming to the acceptance of who he is and what his traditions mean.

The Tallow Series

A collaboration with MJ Howson, an Auther of book trio called The Tallow series. Athule and MJ collaborated on the screenplay of the short film Directed by Athule.
